Dowitcher, a bird related to the snipe, sandpiper, and woodcock. The dowitcher is about 12 inches (30 cm) long. The short-billed dowitcher has a bill about three inches (7.5 cm) long; the bill of the long-billed dowitcher is slightly longer. Both species are olive-brown. They breed in northern Canada and winter in the southern and western United States.
Dowitchers belong to the genus Limnodromus of the family Scolopacidae. The long-billed dowitcher is L. scolopacens; the short-billed, L. griseus.
