Adding a new member to your household is never a small thing, even when that member is a pet. Animals have personalities, tendencies and needs, and cats are no exception. Often labeled distant and hazardous to small children, they're actually a diverse bunch. Cats can live up to two decades, so bringing one home is a long-term commitment -- one that can seem even longer if you choose a breed that's not right for your family, home or lifestyle.
Like most animals, no two cats are alike. Different breeds have different physical traits and personalities, and even within a single breed you'll find variety and exceptions to the rule. So how do you know you're bringing home the right cat for you? Well, while it's impossible to predict for sure, there are breeds and traits you can look for to greatly increase your chances of a good match.
If your living situation is kid-free, picking a feline friend is fairly straightforward. Travel a lot? Looks like you need a cat that likes alone time. If there are children in your house, though, and especially small ones, things can get a bit more complicated. Many cats do great with kids, but there are some that really don't care for sudden movements and grabby little hands.
Picking the right cat for your family doesn't require a ton of research, just some basic knowledge about breed traits, needs and desires. Ultimately, it comes down to a handful of considerations that try to match those feline traits, needs, and desires with your own.
