The national bird of the USA is the bald eagle, one of the most recognizable animals in North America. For generations the bald eagle has served as a powerful national symbol of freedom, independence and strength in American culture.
Although the eagle appeared on national emblems for centuries, it was not formally designated as the nation's official bird until 2024. Congress passed legislation recognizing the bald eagle as the official national bird of the United States, and President Joe Biden signed the bipartisan bill into law on December 23, 2024.
