Whether you prefer cute little puppy dogs or furry baby kittens, new pet owners should always consider longevity when selecting a new companion. Even with proper nutrition, consistent activity and top-notch veterinarian care, few pets will survive more than a decade or two.

Creme Puff: The Current Guinness World Records Holder for Oldest Cat

A female tabby cat named Creme Puff — who lived in Austin, Texas, for a record-breaking 38 years and 3 days in human years (266 in cat years) — was born on August 3, 1967, and died on August 6, 2005.

Owner Jake Perry attributes Creme Puff's ability to live to such a ripe old age to her healthy, active lifestyle and a unique diet consisting of dry cat food supplemented with broccoli, eggs, bacon, coffee with cream and an eyedropper of red wine every few days.

Caring for Senior Cats

Here are a few techniques for giving older feline friends relaxing golden years:

  • Create a cozy area for them to nap and warm up by the window.
  • Check them regularly for any sign of illness or disease.
  • Although senior cats may be less active, they still enjoy fun. Help them find joy in the little things.
  • Take pictures often and make photo albums to save every special moment with your furry loved one.
  • Monitor their reactions; older cats may lose their sight or become deaf.
  • Give them proper nutrition and ensure they have regular veterinarian care.
